Sir William var en sønn av Sir Thomas Tyrell av Heron og Anne, datter av John Marney.

Tyrell-familien eide flere Essex- hjem og gods , inkludert Heron , Gipping og Beeches .

Sir William var en hengiven tilhenger av House of Lancaster og kjempet i slagene i Northampton (1460), Wakefield (1460), St. Albans (1461), Towton (1461) og Barnet (1471) under Rosekrigene .
